It’s a place of pure excitement where you will be able to connect with locals and observe their love for horse racing. Champ de Mars is soaked up with typical Mauritian ambiance and you will surely get to feel the intense adrenaline of the crowd – after all don’t we say that horse racing is the sport of the kings ;)!
Horse racing; but not only! Nothing quite compares the backdrop of Champ de Mars as it is surrounded by a majestic mountain range. The location has been used for races purposes since early 1812 by the Mauritius Turf Club and till now it attracts crowds from every part of the island. Champ de Mars is ideally located in the capital city of Port-Louis where buzzling crowds of locals head to throughout the weekend.
One exceptional event to be present for (if you happen to be in Mauritius at the ideal timing), is definitely the Duchess of York Cup which attracts not only locals but crowds from nearby islands and other racing enthusiasts around the world as well. Take note; the event is usually held throughout the month of May. Alternatively, the Barbe Cup is also a popular horse-racing event at Champ de Mars during the month of July. Even someone who hates huge crowds will change his mind after all the fun of a racing day at Champ de Mars!
