Pamplemousses Botanical Garden

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, commonly known as Pamplemousses, is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Southern Hemisphere, established in 1770. Spanning 37 hectares, it's home to an extraordinary collection of endemic and exotic plants from around the world.

The garden is famous for its giant Victoria Amazonica water lilies, whose leaves can grow up to 3 meters in diameter and are strong enough to support a small child. The collection also includes over 85 varieties of palm trees, including the famous Talipot palm that blooms only once every 40-60 years before dying.

Beyond the flora, the garden features a population of giant Aldabra tortoises, historical monuments, and a colonial-era chateau. It's a peaceful oasis that offers a glimpse into Mauritius' colonial past and botanical diversity.
