Do not forget to discover during your stay in Rodrigues, Cave Patate (Caverne Patate) , a famous speleological site of the island. Located on a coral plain opposite Port-Mathurin, south-west of Rodrigues Island, Caverne Patate is now the most visited cave on the island and is one of the places to be visited imperatively during the holidays in Rodrigues.
Stalactites and stalagmites adorn this strange cavern more than 1000 meters long. In the light of an electric torch, you will discover amazing shapes sculpted in the rock, blackened by the torches used for a long time. Their interpretation varies from one person to another; From a fish to a witch! But the relief and the tints of the vault are the main attractions. By venturing into this cave, it is sometimes possible to descend below the level of the sea, more than 100 meters underground. A natural fault allows the descent. However, a stone carved staircase has been set up to give visitors easy access to the interior of the cave.
A more comfortable access compared to other caves since the average height of the cave is about 20 meters. However, access to the cave requires a permit issued by your hotel in Rodrigues or by the “Terres” office in Port-Mathurin. As for the natural site, it is accessible 4 times a day: 9 am, 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm.
The visit of the cave is usually done in small groups or individually with your guide who will answer all your questions.

The track to the caves is signposted off the road from La Ferme (on the main road into Rodrigues from the airport) to Petite Butte.
Buses en route to La Fourche can drop you at the turn-off.
