Powder Mills Nature Walk is a forest and heritage site in Pamplemousses, beside the SSR National Hospital area. The name reflects the site's colonial history: during the French period, cannon and gunpowder-related production was moved to this area in 1774.
Today the Forestry Service manages more than 60 hectares here as a recreational and educational forest. A network of around 3 km of nature trails passes through planted woodland, native and rare plants, and traces of earlier structures.
The attraction works particularly well when the historical remains and forest are read together. Mahogany, teak, araucaria and tecoma reflect later forestry use, while the endemic garden and uncommon native plants add a conservation layer.
Key details include more than 60 hectares of forest, around 3 km of nature trails, an endemic garden, historic remains and a site name linked to the colonial powder mills.
