Because these aircraft are small and the flights are short, the departure point largely determines what you see — a 15-minute flight from La Prairie shows you the south-west, and a 15-minute flight from Grand Gaube shows you the north-east.

That makes the practical question less "which company is best" and more "which coast am I staying on, and what do I actually want to fly over". A traveller at Le Morne and a traveller at Belle Mare will often be better served by different operators, even though both are booking the same activity.

There is a second thing worth knowing early, because it surprises a lot of couples: all three operators fly two-seat aircraft with one pilot and one passenger. Nobody in Mauritius is currently offering a seaplane where two passengers sit together in the same aircraft. How each operator handles that matters, and it is covered below.

The Famous Le Morne Underwater Waterfall Flight

The "underwater waterfall" off Le Morne is the most-searched scenic flight subject in Mauritius, and it is an optical illusion rather than a literal waterfall. The island sits on a submarine plateau that drops away sharply near its south-western tip, and currents push sand and silt over that underwater shelf. From sea level this is invisible; from a few hundred metres up, plumes of pale sediment streaming off the edge of the shallow lagoon into deeper blue water read to the eye as a torrent pouring downwards. The effect depends on altitude, angle and light, which is why an aerial viewpoint is the only way to see it. Island Wings describes it in similar terms on its own tour page. LagoonFLIGHT operates as part of Born To Fly Ltd, flying Sirius TL3000 seaplanes. It is the operator most directly associated with the Le Morne underwater waterfall, and it states on every tour page that all of its flights — from 15 to 80 minutes — include a pass over the illusion.

Where LagoonFLIGHT Departs

LagoonFLIGHT's published address is La Prairie Beach, Mauritius, on the south-west coast, and every itinerary on its site begins and ends at La Prairie. That places it within the Le Morne–Baie du Cap stretch of coast, close to the south-western resort cluster.

Its contact line is staffed by phone and WhatsApp from 9am to 4pm Mauritius time, with a text desk that accepts messages outside those hours. The company does not publish transfer or hotel-pickup arrangements on its website, so confirm directly with the operator whether any transport is offered from your hotel.

LagoonFLIGHT Flight Options

Five products are currently published. Prices are shown on the operator's site as "as from" figures, per passenger on a single flight.

The Sunset flight is handled differently from the rest. LagoonFLIGHT states that it can only be booked through a waiting list because it depends on conditions, and that the team confirms availability 24 to 48 hours beforehand, offering either one Duo flight (two passengers in formation) or two single flights. No price is published for it — confirm directly with the operator.

What You Can See

LagoonFLIGHT publishes a named waypoint list for each tour, noting that flight paths are subject to wind conditions. The routes are cumulative: each longer flight extends further along the south coast rather than covering different ground.

•     Experience (15 min): La Prairie → the Underwater Waterfall → Îlot Fourneau → Le Morne Village → La Prairie.

•     Discovery (25 min): the same opening, then Maconde, Bel Ombre and Rivière des Galets before returning. The operator describes this as following the shoreline and spending longer over the waterfall itself.

•     Privilege (40 min): adds Souillac and Gris Gris, reaching the wilder south coast. LagoonFLIGHT describes this as its most popular option and says the aircraft also climbs to a higher altitude over the waterfall.

•     Excellence (80 min): the full south and south-east circuit — Maconde, Bel Ombre, Rivière des Galets, Souillac, Gris Gris, Île des Deux Cocos, Blue Bay Marine Park, Grand Port, Île au Phare and Île aux Cerfs, before returning to La Prairie.

Note what that means in practice: the 80-minute Excellence flight is the only way to see both the Le Morne waterfall and Île aux Cerfs on a single LagoonFLIGHT tour.

Aircraft and Passenger Setup

LagoonFLIGHT's FAQ is unusually clear on this point, and it answers the question most couples ask first.

Its seaplanes are two-seaters — one seat for the pilot, one for the passenger. Only one person flies per aircraft, and the operator states it cannot accommodate multiple passengers in the same plane.

That produces two booking formats:

•     Single flight: one passenger at a time, with flights scheduled one after another.

•     Duo flight: two passengers fly in two separate aircraft, side by side in formation, staying in contact by radio throughout.

So a Duo flight is a shared experience, not a shared cabin. Reviewers who describe talking to a partner by microphone mid-flight are describing exactly this formation set-up.

Other published rules: children may fly if they are at least 1 metre tall, and they fly alone with the pilot, because only one passenger is allowed per aircraft. The maximum passenger weight is 100 kg.

On payment, the FAQ states that all payments are made on the beach on the day of the flight and that prepayments are not accepted, while the terms and conditions describe an online booking platform that takes card details. Those two statements sit awkwardly together — confirm the current payment procedure directly with the operator when you book. The FAQ also asks clients not to hold multiple bookings for the same period.

Who LagoonFLIGHT Is Best Suited To

On the published facts, LagoonFLIGHT tends to suit:

•     Travellers staying at Le Morne, La Gaulette, Rivière Noire or elsewhere in the south-west, for whom La Prairie is the nearest departure point.

•     Anyone whose main objective is the Le Morne underwater waterfall, since every flight includes it and the entry-level flight is the cheapest way to see it from the air.

•     Travellers who want the south coast specifically — Maconde, Bel Ombre, Souillac and Gris Gris appear on the 25-minute flight and longer.

•     Couples who like the idea of a formation flight and are comfortable flying in separate aircraft.

Sealoy Flights Mauritius

Sealoy Flights Ltd is the east-coast option, and the only one of the three based on that side of the island. That geography is its main point of difference.

Where Sealoy Departs

Sealoy's published departure point is Palmar Beach, Coastal Road Palmar, Quatre Cocos, 41605, with an administrative office at Crystals Beach Resort on the same coastal road.

For travellers staying around Belle Mare, Palmar, Trou d'Eau Douce, Quatre Cocos or the wider Flacq district, this is by some distance the closest seabase — the other two operators sit on opposite corners of the island. Sealoy does not publish transfer times or hotel pickup arrangements, so confirm directly with the operator what is included.

Sealoy Flight Options

Sealoy currently promotes three named flights:

•     The Short Amber

•     The Eastern Underwater Waterfall

•     The Turquoise Experience

Here the guide has to be straight with you. Sealoy does not publish durations or prices for these flights on its public web pages. Its booking runs through a third-party reservation widget, and the flight names on the homepage link through to that system rather than to descriptive tour pages. Nor does the site publish route waypoints, age limits, height requirements or weight limits.

Because this article's rule is not to guess at operational detail, the position is simply: check current durations, prices, routes and restrictions directly with Sealoy through its booking system or by contacting the team. Figures circulating in traveller reviews and on reseller listings are not a reliable substitute, and resellers in particular frequently carry outdated prices.

What Sealoy does publish is the aircraft. Flights are operated with the Remos Mirage G3, a German-built high-wing light aircraft powered by a Rotax 912 ULS engine. The operator describes it as offering side-by-side seating with unobstructed views of the lagoon, reef and coastline. As with the other two operators, this is a two-seat aircraft — pilot and one passenger.

Eastern Underwater Waterfall

This needs care, because the name invites an assumption that is not supported by the operator's own wording.

Sealoy uses "Eastern Underwater Waterfall" as the name of one of its flights, and its about page refers to flying "all the way to the iconic Eastern Underwater Waterfall" along the east coast. The famous illusion that appears in most Mauritius photography is off Le Morne, in the south-west — the opposite side of the island from Palmar.

Sealoy does not publish a route map or a geographic description that would let a third party state precisely where its Eastern Underwater Waterfall feature is located, or how the visual effect compares. So the accurate position is this: these are marketed as two different experiences on two different coasts, and travellers specifically wanting the widely photographed Le Morne illusion should confirm with Sealoy exactly what its Eastern flight passes over before booking. Neither is the "real" or "fake" waterfall — that framing appears in marketing and in forum arguments, not in any authoritative geographic source.

Sealoy Sky Concierge

Sealoy offers a Sky Concierge Experience, described as a tailor-made flight for occasions such as a proposal, a honeymoon moment, an anniversary, a birthday or any celebration a traveller wants to mark. The operator does not publish inclusions or pricing for it and directs enquiries to its team — so confirm directly with the operator what a Sky Concierge booking actually involves.

Weather, Cancellation and Payment Rules

Sealoy publishes the most detailed cancellation policy of the three operators, which is worth reading before you book.

The pilot in command holds full responsibility for deciding whether a flight proceeds. Listed reasons for cancellation include cyclonic conditions, strong winds, heavy rain or sea conditions affecting take-off or landing; routine safety checks and maintenance; the pilot's own safety judgement; passenger no-shows or late arrivals; and force majeure. If Sealoy cancels, it offers rescheduling, alternative flights or refunds, and says an alternative date will be arranged as soon as conditions allow.

If you cancel, the published fees are firm: 100% if you do not show up, 100% if you cancel two days or fewer before the flight, and 50% if you cancel more than two days before. A system and processing fee of up to 10% may also apply to all cancellations, including those made well in advance. Anyone booking a flight into a tight itinerary should factor that in.

Who Sealoy Is Best Suited To

On the published facts, Sealoy tends to suit:

•     Guests staying on the east coast, where it is the only local seabase.

•     Travellers who want eastern lagoon and reef scenery rather than the south-west.

•     Anyone planning a proposal, honeymoon or celebration flight who wants a tailor-made option.

•     Travellers comfortable confirming prices and flight details directly with an operator rather than comparing published figures online.

It suits you less if you need to compare exact prices and durations before contacting anyone, or if the Le Morne waterfall specifically is your reason for flying.

Island Wings Mauritius

Island Wings is the longest-established of the three by its own account, describing a story that began around 25 years ago, and it publishes the most complete set of routes, prices and passenger rules.

Where Island Wings Departs

Island Wings flies from a seabase in the lagoon in front of LUX Grand Gaube Hotel*, on the north-east coast. Its directions are specific: enter through the hotel's main gate, park, then walk down to the hangar beside the hotel car park on the seaward side.

That makes it the natural choice for travellers in Grand Gaube, Grand Baie, Cap Malheureux, Pereybere and the wider north and north-east. Published opening hours are Monday to Friday 9:30–16:00, Saturday 9:30–12:00, closed Sunday — the only operator of the three publishing set hours, and worth noting if your schedule is tight.

Island Wings also runs separate Runway Tours from a private airstrip at Mon Loisir Sugar Estate near Rivière du Rempart. Those are land-based flights, not seaplane flights, and are booked through a different contact.

Island Wings Flight Options

Five seaplane routes are published, all departing from the Grand Gaube seabase, priced per passenger.

• Île d'Ambre — 15 minutes — €160 — north-east coast and lagoon

• The Blue Hole — 30 minutes — €235 — north-east coast, turtles and rays

• Île aux Cerfs — 60 minutes — €365 — east coast via Roches Noires

The operator also mentions around-the-island tours, subject to meteorological conditions and air traffic regulations, without publishing a price — confirm directly with the operator.

A few route details worth knowing. The Blue Hole flight notes turtles and rays in the area, and adds that humpback whales migrate to Mauritian waters during the austral winter, roughly June to September. The Île au Phare flight goes down to Grand Port, the island's oldest port, past the lighthouse island also known as Île aux Fouquets, where the lighthouse was built in 1864, and continues to Île aux Aigrettes before returning.

Island Wings Le Morne Route

This is the one that needs explaining properly, because the price only makes sense once you understand the geography.

Island Wings' Le Morne underwater waterfall flight is 100 minutes and €650 — the longest and most expensive single seaplane flight published by any of the three operators. That is not a premium charged for the waterfall itself. It is a consequence of flying from the north-east to the south-west and back.

The published itinerary takes in the seven islands of the north-east coast, then the south coast, then continues to the south-west to fly over the Le Morne underwater waterfall, before returning up the east coast to the base. In other words, a traveller booking this is buying a broad aerial circuit of a large part of Mauritius, with the waterfall as one segment of it — not a short local hop over Le Morne.

The practical comparison is stark. If the waterfall is the only thing you want to see, LagoonFLIGHT reaches it in 15 minutes from €159 because it is already there. If you want to see much of the island's coastline and the waterfall, and you are staying in the north, the Island Wings route does something the others do not.

Aircraft, Age and Weight Rules

Island Wings publishes its fleet: the Savannah S, the Ekolot Topaz, the Ekolot Junior and the X-Air, all fitted with Rotax 912 engines, VHF radio and aircraft emergency parachutes. The operator states that the Topaz and the Junior fly from the Grand Gaube seabase, and describes the X-Air as an amphibious design it has used for around ten years.

The passenger rules are published clearly:

•     One passenger at a time per plane. The aircraft are two-seaters, one seat for the pilot and one for the passenger, and the operator states it cannot accommodate more.

•     Weight limit: 105 kg per passenger.

•     Age limit: 7 to 99 years.

•     Payment: card (Visa and Mastercard, with American Express also listed on the booking form) or cash in euros, US dollars or Mauritian rupees, with exchange rates applied. Mobile payments are not supported.

•     Duration definition: flight time is measured from engine start to engine stop, and the published duration includes taxiing, take-off and landing procedures.

On the published facts, Island Wings tends to suit:

•     Guests staying in the north and north-east, from Grand Gaube and Grand Baie across to Cap Malheureux.

•     Travellers who want to see a large portion of the island from the air rather than one landmark.

•     Visitors specifically interested in Île aux Cerfs, Île au Phare, Île aux Aigrettes or Grand Port, all of which appear on published routes.

•     Anyone who wants to compare exact prices, durations and restrictions before making contact, since Island Wings publishes all of them.

•     Families travelling with children aged 7 and over, given the published age range.

It suits you less if you are based in the south-west, or if you want the Le Morne waterfall on a short, low-cost flight.

LagoonFLIGHT vs Sealoy vs Island Wings

Search seaplane Mauritius and the same three names come back, but they are not competing for the same traveller and no operator wins outright. Here is how they line up on the factors that actually decide a booking.

Three honest observations from that table.

The cheapest entry flights are within a euro of each other — €159 with LagoonFLIGHT and €160 with Island Wings — but they show you opposite ends of the island. The price is not the differentiator; the geography is.

Transparency differs sharply. Island Wings publishes everything. LagoonFLIGHT publishes prices, routes and passenger rules but not Sunset pricing. Sealoy publishes its departure point, aircraft and cancellation terms but not its durations or prices, which means comparing it on cost requires a direct enquiry.

At 80 minutes, the two operators that publish prices diverge by €85 — LagoonFLIGHT from €520, Island Wings €435 — but they fly different routes from opposite bases, so this is not a like-for-like comparison.

Which Seaplane Operator Is Closest to Your Hotel?

Staying at Le Morne or in the South-West

LagoonFLIGHT's La Prairie base is the nearest departure point, sitting on the same stretch of south-western coast. It is also the only operator whose short flights reach the Le Morne underwater waterfall, because it is already overhead within minutes of take-off. Reaching either of the other two operators means crossing the island. Driving times are not published by any operator, so plan your own transfer.

Staying in Belle Mare or Palmar

Sealoy's Palmar seabase is on your doorstep and the only operator on that coast. The trade-off is that its published information is thinner, so budget a call or a booking-system check before you commit. Island Wings at Grand Gaube is the next-closest option for east-coast guests wanting published prices, and its Île aux Cerfs and Île au Phare routes cover east-coast scenery.

Staying in Grand Gaube or the North

Island Wings departs from the lagoon in front of LUX* Grand Gaube, so for guests of that hotel the walk is a few minutes, and for the wider Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux area it is the closest seabase by a wide margin. It also publishes the widest spread of durations, from 15 to 100 minutes, which makes it easy to match a flight to a budget.

Staying Elsewhere

If you are in Port Louis, Flic-en-Flac, Tamarin or the central plateau, no operator is obviously closest, so compare on these instead:

•     Transfer distance and driving time to each base, using your own route planning.

•     The route you actually want — south coast, east coast, northern islands or the Le Morne illusion.

•     Flight duration against how long you want to be in a small aircraft.

•     Total cost including getting there and back.

•     Weather flexibility — how many spare days you have if your flight is postponed.

How Much Does a Seaplane Flight Cost in Mauritius?

Seaplane Mauritius pricing is quoted per passenger rather than per aircraft, which matters more here than it would elsewhere: because only one passenger flies per plane, two people means two full fares.

LagoonFLIGHT publishes "as from" prices per passenger on a single flight: €159 for 15 minutes, €205 for 25 minutes, €299 for 40 minutes and €520 for 80 minutes. No price is published for the Sunset flight. Because these are "as from" figures and Duo bookings involve two aircraft, confirm the total cost for your party at the time of booking.

Island Wings publishes fixed prices per passenger: €160 for 15 minutes, €235 for 30 minutes, €365 for 60 minutes, €435 for 80 minutes and €650 for the 100-minute Le Morne route. No price is published for its around-the-island tours.

Sealoy Flights does not publish prices on its public pages; they sit inside its booking system. Confirm directly with the operator.

Three things to check before you assume a price is complete:

•     Per passenger, not per aircraft. Both operators that publish prices quote per passenger — and since only one passenger flies per aircraft, two people means two fares.

•     Transfers are not mentioned in any operator's published pricing. Assume you are getting yourself to the departure point unless told otherwise.

•     Taxes and fees are not itemised on any of the three sites. Sealoy separately notes that a system and processing fee of up to 10% may apply to cancellations.

Scenic-flight pricing in Mauritius moves with season and demand, so treat every figure here as a snapshot of the date checked rather than a quote.

How Long Do Flights Last?

Across the three operators, published seaplane durations run from 15 minutes to 100 minutes, with Sealoy's unpublished.

What matters more than the headline number is what it measures — and only one operator says.

Island Wings states explicitly that flight duration is measured from the moment the engine starts until the engine stops, and that the experience includes taxiing, take-off and landing. On a seaplane that is not a trivial detail: taxiing out across a lagoon to a suitable take-off run, and taxiing back in afterwards, takes real minutes out of a 15-minute booking.

LagoonFLIGHT and Sealoy do not publish how they define their durations, so it is not safe to assume their minutes are counted the same way. If you are choosing between a 15-minute flight from one operator and a 15-minute flight from another, ask each how the time is measured — it is a fair question and it materially changes what you are buying.

Separately, none of the three publishes a total on-site time including check-in and safety briefing. Allow more than the flight duration when planning your day.

Seaplane vs Helicopter in Mauritius

Both exist in Mauritius and they are genuinely different products rather than competing versions of one.

Take-off and landing. A seaplane takes off and lands on water, taxiing out across the lagoon. Several travellers describe this as the memorable part of the experience in itself. A helicopter departs from a helipad or airport apron, which is a more conventional start but usually a shorter transfer from a resort.

Aircraft format and capacity. The three Mauritian seaplane operators all fly light two-seat aircraft carrying a single passenger. Helicopter sightseeing typically carries several passengers at once, which is the practical difference for families or groups who want to fly together in one cabin — something no seaplane operator here currently offers.

Viewing style. A high-wing light aircraft gives a clear downward view from a fixed cruise, and Sealoy specifically describes its Remos G3 as offering unobstructed views. A helicopter can hover and turn on the spot, which suits a different kind of photography.

Routes and bases. Seaplane routes are shaped by three fixed seabases in the south-west, east and north-east. Helicopter operations work from different points again, so the nearest option to your hotel may not be the same aircraft type.

Price. Comparing the two on cost requires live quotes from both, and this article has only verified seaplane pricing. Do not assume one is categorically cheaper.

Neither is better in the abstract. If you want to fly with someone beside you, a helicopter answers a need no seaplane here does. If the water take-off is part of the appeal, only a seaplane delivers it.

What Happens If the Weather Is Bad?

Scenic flying in light aircraft is weather-dependent everywhere, and Mauritius is no exception. Wind, visibility, rain and sea state all affect whether a flight can operate safely, and a lagoon take-off adds sea conditions to the list.

Each operator handles it differently on paper:

•     LagoonFLIGHT states that if weather conditions force its pilots to cancel for safety reasons, the team will contact you to reschedule as soon as possible.

•     Sealoy publishes the fullest policy. The pilot in command decides, with cyclonic conditions, strong winds, heavy rain and sea conditions affecting take-off or landing all listed as grounds for rescheduling. If Sealoy cancels, it offers rescheduling, alternative flights or refunds, and says an alternative date will be arranged as soon as conditions allow.

•     Island Wings says its team will contact you as soon as possible by WhatsApp, phone or email, asks you to keep your phone to hand on the day, and invites you to message on WhatsApp before leaving your accommodation to confirm the flight is going ahead.

No operator guarantees that a cancelled flight can be rescheduled within your stay, and none of them can. As planning advice rather than a promise: avoid booking a scenic flight for the last day of your holiday if flexibility matters to you. Leaving a spare day or two in the itinerary gives everyone room to move if the wind gets up. And note Sealoy's cancellation fees apply to guest cancellations — a weather cancellation by the operator is treated separately.

Can Children Fly?

Rules differ by operator and should not be combined.

LagoonFLIGHT states that children are welcome to fly provided they are at least 1 metre tall, and that they will fly alone with the pilot, because only one passenger is allowed per aircraft. Parents should think carefully about whether a child is comfortable flying without a family member beside them. LagoonFLIGHT does not publish a minimum age in years, or any parent or guardian requirement — confirm directly with the operator.

Island Wings publishes an age limit of 7 to 99 years. As with LagoonFLIGHT, one passenger flies per aircraft, so a child flies with the pilot only.

Sealoy does not publish age, height or child policies. Confirm directly with the operator.

Weight & Height Restrictions

These are the rules that most often stop a booking, so check them before you plan around a flight.

• Maximum passenger weight — LagoonFLIGHT 100 kg; Island Wings 105 kg; Sealoy not published

• Minimum height — LagoonFLIGHT 1 metre; Sealoy and Island Wings not published

LagoonFLIGHT states plainly that it cannot accommodate passengers above its weight limit, and the reason is straightforward: these are light aircraft with tight weight-and-balance margins. If you are near either threshold, raise it when you enquire rather than on the beach.

Can You Take Photos?

Island Wings is the only operator that publishes guidance, and it is encouraging rather than restrictive: its tour pages list sunglasses, a camera and your sense of adventure under what to bring.

LagoonFLIGHT and Sealoy do not publish camera, phone, GoPro or bag policies on their websites. Travellers frequently describe photographing freely on both, but reviews are not an operator policy, and rules on larger cameras, mounts and loose items can differ.
