Driving in Mauritius

What to Know Before You Drive

Licence

Bring your valid driving licence and passport. An International Driving Permit is useful if your licence is not in English or French.

Left-hand driving

Mauritius drives on the left. Roundabouts, village roads and mountain bends need slower, more careful driving.

Fuel

Fuel stations are common around towns and main roads, but fill up before long south, east or mountain routes.

Parking and speed

Use marked parking where possible and follow posted speed limits. Beach and market areas can get tight during weekends.

Car Rental Mauritius FAQ

Do I need a car in Mauritius?

A rental car is useful if you want beaches, viewpoints and food stops at your own pace. If you prefer not to drive, use taxis or private transfers for longer days.

What side of the road do people drive on in Mauritius?

Mauritius drives on the left. Roads can be narrow in villages and mountain areas, so plan extra time for scenic drives.

Can I book a Mauritius rental car before arrival?

Yes. Booking before arrival is recommended in peak months so you can secure the right vehicle category and collection details.

Do I need an international driving licence in Mauritius?

Visitors should carry their valid home driving licence. An International Driving Permit can help if your licence is not in English or French.
