Grand Gaube

Grand Gaube is a quiet fishing village on the northeast coast of Mauritius with a public beach, lagoon views and small boats along the shore. It suits couples, photographers and travellers seeking a more local coastal atmosphere; allow around 1–2 hours for a relaxed visit.

Grand Gaube offers a very different version of northern Mauritius from the restaurants, shops and nightlife of Grand Baie. Here, the coastline meets a long-established fishing village, where small boats on the water and everyday village life are as much part of the experience as the beach itself.

The public beach at Grand Gaube is a good place to slow the pace of a north or northeast coast road trip. Instead of arriving with a long list of attractions to complete, spend time looking across the lagoon, walking along the shoreline and watching the fishing boats that give the village much of its coastal character.

Snorkelling can also form part of a visit to Grand Gaube, although conditions in the lagoon naturally vary. The destination is better approached as a complete coastal experience rather than choosing it solely for one water activity.

This is also what separates Grand Gaube from some of the better-known beaches farther west. Travellers primarily looking for a large stretch of sand, a busy resort atmosphere or lots of entertainment may prefer another part of the north. Grand Gaube is more rewarding for those who appreciate local atmosphere, photography, quiet coastal scenery and a slower pace.

Allow around 1–2 hours if Grand Gaube is one stop during a road trip. You can easily stay longer if you want to relax beside the water, explore more of the village or make it part of a slower day on the northeast coast.
