Mont Choisy

The beach at Mont Choisy is a long, spacious stretch of sand on the northwest coast of Mauritius, known for calm lagoon water, swimming, walking and shade beneath casuarina trees. It suits families and relaxed beachgoers; allow around 2–4 hours and expect a livelier atmosphere on weekends.

Mont Choisy is a good choice when you want space rather than a compact beach scene.

The coastline curves along the northwest of Mauritius between the Grand Baie area and Trou aux Biches, with a long stretch of pale sand bordered by casuarina trees. Compared with smaller beaches around the north, there is more room to walk, find your own section of sand and spend a few unhurried hours beside the lagoon.

Swimming is one of the main reasons to visit. The sheltered water makes Mont Choisy particularly popular with families and travellers who want a straightforward beach day without needing to organise a full excursion.

It is also one of the better northern locations for a long coastal walk. Instead of arriving, swimming and leaving, walk farther along the curve of the shore; the sense of space is part of what distinguishes Mont Choisy from nearby Grand Baie and the smaller beach at Pereybere.

Snorkeling should not be the main reason you choose Mont Choisy. You may see marine life in some areas when conditions are suitable, but travellers specifically looking for coral and stronger snorkeling opportunities should consider nearby Trou aux Biches or another dedicated snorkeling location.

The atmosphere changes depending on when you visit. Weekdays generally suit travellers looking for a quieter experience, while weekends can bring more local families and groups enjoying the coast together. That makes Mont Choisy particularly interesting if you want to see how Mauritians use the beach socially rather than experiencing only a resort setting.

For most visitors, 2–4 hours is enough for swimming, walking and relaxing. Stay longer if you want an uncomplicated beach day, or combine Mont Choisy with Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, Pereybere or Cap Malheureux as part of a wider north Mauritius itinerary.
