Wild southern cliffs where waves crash against the shore
Gris Gris is the southernmost point of Mauritius, where dramatic basalt cliffs meet the powerful waves of the Indian Ocean. Unlike the calm lagoons elsewhere on the island, here there is no protective reef, allowing the full force of the ocean to crash against the rocks. The name 'Gris Gris' reportedly comes from the gray (gris in French) color of the cliffs and the misty spray from the waves. The area is steeped in local legend and offers a glimpse of Mauritius' wild, untamed side. A viewing platform and walking paths allow visitors to safely admire the powerful waves and dramatic scenery. Nearby, La Roche Qui Pleure (The Crying Rock) is a cliff face that appears to weep as water runs down its surface.
