Seven Coloured Earth

The Seven Coloured Earths of Chamarel is one of Mauritius' most famous attractions and a unique geological phenomenon. This striking landscape features sand dunes in seven distinct colors: red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow, all naturally occurring side by side.

The colors are caused by the volcanic rock cooling at different temperatures and converting to clay minerals. Remarkably, if you mix the different colored sands together, they will eventually separate back into their distinct layers over time.

Located in the Chamarel region, this natural wonder is often visited alongside the nearby Chamarel Waterfall and the Rhumerie de Chamarel rum distillery, making for a perfect day trip exploring the southwest.
