Le Morne

Le Morne is a white-sand beach on the south-west coast of Mauritius, set below the UNESCO-listed Le Morne Brabant mountain. The turquoise lagoon works well for snorkelling, while kitesurfers head to the south-east side. It is made up of several sections, including the public beach, Le Paradis, La Pointe and the kitesurf lagoon. Rich in beauty and history, Le Morne is a gorgeous beach enhanced with white-bone sand and turquoise water.

Governed by the majestic Le Morne Brabant Mountain (icon of Mauritius as it has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO), Le Morne holds a special place in the heart of not only many Mauritians but a long list of tourists too! It is yet another good spot to feast your eyes through some snorkeling session but to top it all, Le Morne is also a hot pick for kite surfers. Swimming, snorkelling and lagoon conditions

• Snorkelling — Excellent in our local assessment, but strong currents can make it unsuitable on the day. Choose conditions and a suitable location over the expectation of a snorkelling session.
• Currents — Be particularly mindful of currents. Do not enter where warnings are displayed or where you are uncertain about the water movement and a safe return to shore.
• Swimming — Stay within your ability and avoid swimming alone. Strong swimming skills do not make strong currents safe.
• Boat awareness — Keep clear of boat routes, moorings and boarding areas. Look for a suitable area away from boat movements before considering entry.
• If conditions are unclear — Ask for local guidance and stay on shore if there is any doubt. Do not swim farther out simply to reach a snorkelling spot.

Crowds, sand and atmosphere

• Weekdays — Usually a moderate crowd, with the beach particularly popular among tourists.
• School holidays — Expect busier conditions during the week as well as at weekends.
• Weekends — Crowded during summer. The atmosphere can vary between the different beach spots.
• Sand — Ranges from fine to coarser sand, depending on the section. Choose a spot that suits your comfort and plans for the day.

Facilities, refreshments and getting there

• Public amenities — Public toilets are available on site. With several beach spots to choose from, locate the facilities rather than assuming they serve every access point equally.
• Parking — Parking is generally easy in our local experience. Keep access routes clear and allow for greater demand during peak periods.
• Food and essentials — Two restaurants are noted locally, with no nearby shops in the beach areas covered. Bring essentials and check restaurant availability before relying on a meal there.
• Public transport — Bus connections are available from Port Louis or Quatre Bornes. Confirm the route, any changes and the stop serving your chosen beach area before travelling.
• Sea activities — No organised sea activities were noted at the particular beach spots in these observations. Availability elsewhere around Le Morne may differ.
