Mauritius beaches are beautiful, but conditions change from one coast to another. A beach can be calm in the morning and windy in the afternoon. A snorkelling spot can be clear one day and cloudy after rain or rough sea. Always check the lagoon before entering.

If locals are avoiding a certain area, there is usually a reason. Ask before swimming if you are unsure.

Use reef-safe sunscreen when possible, especially if you are snorkelling. Do not touch coral, do not stand on reef and keep a respectful distance from marine life. Coral is fragile and essential to the health of the lagoon.

Bring reef shoes for beaches with broken coral or rocky sections. Some lagoons look soft from the shore but can have sharp coral pieces underfoot.

On Sundays and public holidays, popular beaches become lively with Mauritian families. This is part of local culture and can be a lovely experience, but if you want quiet, visit early in the morning or choose a less developed beach.
